Once upon a time….
Human settlement in Livigno is uncertain, some historians claim that there were Ligurian peoples, Rhaetian or Slovenians who crossed the Danube to the local river named Spool- Acqua Granda!
Tourism started in the 1952’s with the winter opening of the road towards Bormio and blossomed in 1965 with the building of Mont Schera tunnel. It linked Livigno with Switzerland and therefore northern Europe.
The name of Livigno seems to derive from the latin word “lavina” and from dialect of Bormio “leina” which means avalanche.
The reason is because the place is covered by snow most parts of the year.
